Financial Transparency Update from the Board
Growing Forward: An Update from Abby’s Organic Community Farm
Over the past several months, Abby’s Organic Community Farm has been working through an important period of transition. While there are still challenges ahead, meaningful progress is being made to strengthen the farm’s operations and prepare for a sustainable future.
Digital Access and Communications
The farm has regained control of several important digital assets, including our domains, website, social media accounts, and other essential online services. Account security and recovery information are also being updated so these resources remain under the farm’s control and are not dependent upon any one individual.
We have established a new official email address, info@abbysfarm.org, and have begun implementing Google Workspace for the farm. This will eventually provide centralized email, document storage, calendars, member groups, and shared access for authorized volunteers and leaders. The transition is being completed carefully and in stages.
Financial Challenges
The farm continues to face significant financial challenges. Current membership income alone is not sufficient to cover all operating expenses, maintenance needs, insurance, utilities, and unexpected repairs.
The Board is reviewing expenses, improving financial oversight, and evaluating additional sources of income and community support. Our goal is to establish a realistic operating plan that allows the farm to meet its obligations while continuing to serve our members and the surrounding community.
Tractor Decision
Our tractor is approximately 11 years old and has more than 1,860 operating hours. It remains an essential piece of equipment for maintaining the property.
The Board is currently evaluating whether repairing the existing tractor is the most responsible choice or whether the farm should replace it through financing or leasing. Replacement options involve a long-term financial commitment, insurance requirements, and—in the case of a lease—annual operating-hour limitations.
Because the tractor may still have considerable useful life remaining, the decision will be based on repair costs, reliability, safety, and the farm’s overall financial condition.
New Board Members Needed
As we plan for the farm’s next chapter, we are seeking additional board members who believe in Abby’s mission and are willing to contribute their time, experience, and ideas.
We especially welcome individuals with experience in:
Finance, accounting, or nonprofit administration
Fundraising, grants, or community partnerships
Communications, technology, or social media
Agriculture, facilities, or equipment management
Volunteer coordination and community engagement
Board service is an opportunity to help shape the future of Abby’s Organic Community Farm and preserve this special place for our members, visiting children, families, and the wider community.
